What is a diesel particulate filter - DPF?
The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a device installed in the exhaust system of all new diesel engines made after January 1, 2007. A DPF is a filter that captures and stores exhaust soot in order to reduce emissions from diesel vehicles. A DPF filter has limited capacity so this trapped or collected soot has to be cleaned periodically, aka PM.
The cleaning process removes the soot deposited in the filter by baking the filter over 1000 degrees which turns the soot to ash for removal. A clean fliter will reduce the harmful exhaust emissions and also prevent the tell-tale black smoke you use to see from diesel vehicles, particularly when accelerating.
The DPF is comprised of two chambers. The first chamber (DOC) works to oxidize a portion of the NO gas in the exhaust to NO2. The second chamber (DPF) then collects the soot that is trapped inside. This results in a small amount of soot/ash remaining in the filter, which builds up and reduces the effectiveness of the DPF. Vehicles with high idle times and little highway driving will need the DPF and DOC filters cleaned more frequently.
